What I'm Celebrating This Week

– Been quiet for the past couple of weeks on my blog…mostly because I've been a bit overwhelmed with my workload, three launches, and trying to not go mad LOL

– All launches are doing exceptionally well… My best yet! It also helped that my publisher put one of my backlist books in Bookbub as that gave all my books a nice spike. And now, my books are bestsellers on the pubisher's website:

screen-shot-2016-12-09-at-12-29-30-pm

– My first self published story has just been released, and I have been so excited to finally do this.. yep, I'm now a hybrid author:) The reviews coming in Fallen Ashes are incredible… Makes me so happy. Anyway, I'm sure you're eager to read more about Fallen Ashes… Check it out here.

FALLEN ASHES

Last of your kind? Check. Being hunted by everyone? Check. Waking up magically bound to the world's most cocky and annoying assassin? Wait, what?

Survival has always been on the top of Fallen's To Do List as being the last Dragon shifter in Tapestry had painted a target on her long ago. But after being captured and magically tethered to an assassin who could kill her in an instant, time is running out. With the fate of an entire world at stake, Fallen has to find a way to get out alive, with or without her unwanted companion…her incredibly sexy unwanted companion.

Exiled from the Kingdom and on a mission to save his stepfather from the Collector, Saber's life is already a mess. But he never could imagine that he'd be hexed into a mindless shadow assassin or worse, being kidnapped and mystically-bound to a hot blonde vixen that has a crazy obsession with fire. Sexy/strange/fire-chick aside, he has got to find a way to get out of there but Fallen isn't in the least being helpful with their escape plan. Seriously, can things get any worse?

Magically-bound, determined, and both fighting an undeniable attraction, can Saber and Fallen work together to free themselves and save their world by defeating the Collector?  Or will time slip out of their grasp and all will be lost?AddtoGoodreads.jpg

What I'm Celebrating This Week

– Despite this week starting off incredibly busy, it ended on a quieter note, and I can't be happier to have a calm weekend. Looks like it might rain here, so I'll be spending it with friends who are visiting for the weekend.

– I recevied an email from my publisher this week that they've been acquired by Simon & Schuster. This is huge… they are a Big Five publishing company. While we don't know the full details yet of what's to come and how exactly this impacts all the authors, I am taking this as a positive note. Something awesome is bound to come out of this. I'll be keeping you posted.

– The Dark Legends boxed set I'm in has hit the Bestseller list on Amazon and reached #75 on Amazon!!! That is pretty exciting.

– My latest Wulfkin Legacy novel has just hit Amazon on pre-order. So far the book is doing quite well and I've got a few more promotions lined up, so fingers crossed it continues to sell well. Check it out here.

Title: Huntress Found

Series: The Timekeeper’s War, Book One

Author: A.A. Chamberlynn

Release Day: 11/11/16

Category: New Adult

Genre: Contemporary Fantasy, Mythology Mashup with Sci-Fi and Steampunk

Price: 99 cents!!

Description:

From the author of the bestselling Zyan Star fantasy series comes a new world of magic…

Evryn’s got mad skills at playing hide and seek. She can find lost children, hack the most secure databases, pretty much anything. Except for the one thing she desires most: the knowledge of who her parents are, why they abandoned her, and what her special talent means about who and what she really is.

So, when a guy named Seeker appears quite literally out of nowhere, claiming to know about her past and offering her a job, Evryn can’t say yes fast enough. Even if it does mean following him to another realm. As in, mind-blowingly, not Earth. Apparently she’s part of an elite clan of Hunters descending from Artemis who can find just about anything in all of time and space. As the last of Artemis’ direct lineage, Evryn is her clan’s best shot at finding a lost city before rival clans do.

Not just any city, but the flying, realm-hopping city of Skye. Aboard Skye is the Artifex, a magical device with the power to create or destroy worlds. Everyone wants the device, and with Evryn’s super-powered lineage, it means everyone wants her, too. It’s hard to decide who she can trust, even within her own clan. After she discovers a strange, alluring connection to the Artifex, she’s not even sure she can trust herself. Worse yet, the only person who may be able to help her is the Timekeeper, the sadistic ancient being who created the Artifex. An interdimensional war is brewing, and Evryn is right at the epicenter of it all.

Let the hunt begin.

Timeless by Crystal Collier

Welcome Crystal Collier here today to share her new book and some editing tips!

In 1771, Alexia had everything: the man of her dreams, reconciliation with her father, even a child on the way. But she was never meant to stay. It broke her heart, but Alexia heeded destiny and traveled five hundred years back to stop the Soulless from becoming.

In the thirteenth century, the Holy Roman Church has ordered the Knights Templar to exterminate the Passionate, her bloodline. As Alexia fights this new threat—along with an unfathomable evil and her own heart—the Soulless genesis nears. But none of her hard-won battles may matter if she dies in childbirth before completing her mission.

Can Alexia escape her own clock?

GUEST POST

Thank you T.F. Walsh for having me here today!

So you've written this story with an epic beginning, a killer end, but the middle–ugh! No matter what you do, you can't seem to fix the saggy, boring, drawn-out middle.

Here are a few quick tips to whip that middle into a gem.

First we have to diagnose the issue. Often middles suffer from one of these:

1. Passive character action
2. Lack of focus on plot
3. Where did the tension go?

Correcting character passivity:

Characters need to change and grow in a novel. It's a known truth. Otherwise we end up with "cardboard" characters, and who wants to hang out with them? I mean, they can't even talk back to you!

The protagonist needs to be changing and challenged by everything that comes their way. No one wants to read about someone smoothly sailing over their challenges.

A big issue I run across is a character who is merely reacting to everything that's happening rather than actively seeking after their goals. It's fine for a character to react to their world, but when you hit the 50% point of a book, that HAS to change. This is the point at which the character has been pushed and shoved and won't take it no more! From this moment on they must actively go after what they need–whether that be a relationship, independence, power, wealth, revenge, justice, or peace. (And if your character doesn't BREAK, maybe that's the issue?)

Focusing the Plot:

But your character does change and grow and pursues their goals. What is wrong?

Have you looked at the plot? A dynamic plot has a strong beginning, a dramatic turn around at the middle, and a powerful end, but that's not all. The middle of that plot should be contain no less than 3 (and preferably more like 6) plot points that DRIVE us toward a need for resolution. Try creating a plot chart where you actually measure where your action falls. I'm serious here–an actual graph. Estimate the tension for each plot point along the way on a scale from one to ten. (This means you have to clearly identify the turning points in the manuscript–any time something happens that motivates major change.)

Every time you hit a plot point, you're going to go from a negative to a positive motivation, or the reverse. Technically, every chapter should be balance by a negative to positive (or the reverse). This is one way to get to the next issue…

Where did the tension go?

Image from Getty Images

There was a point at which I started chanting "tension all the time" while writing. There must be a juicy carrot–a mystery or desire hanging in front of the readers face to keep them moving forward. What question do you want readers asking in each chapter? What feeling do you want them to experience at the end of each chapter? Don't leave it to chance. Actually ask yourself these question and answer them–then implement the answer if it doesn't already exist. Keep a mystery/need in front of the characters, and only let your readers relax about once every 60 pages. Keep them worried. Keep them hopeful. Keep them wondering.

In the end, middles only sag if we don't build the proper structure beneath them. Go forth and support! You've got this.

What advice do you give for sagging middles? Have you been able to fix a book from the middle?

What I'm Celebrating This Week

– What an insanely busy week. I've been drowning in edits as my publisher sent back the second round of edits for Cloaked in Christmas, and I'm glad to say they are all done. Then one more round to go for final proofing. I've also been working on the edits for Demon's Mark.

– I'm behind on so many things, but I plan to get them all done this weekend.

– This weekend I also plan to use Vellum for the first time… it's a software for mac that allows me to format my own books. Let's hope it goes well as I need to create a sampler mobi file by Monday for an instagram promo I'm doing with a group of authors.

– I saw the cover for Cloaked in Christmas from my publisher… I can't stop smiling… I aboslutely love it. Coming soon.

– This week, my latest release went live on pre-order, and for a limited time, FALLEN ASHES is only 99 cents. Super excited as the sales so far are pretty good, so if you want to grab a copy before the price goes up, check it out here.

Curious what's the book is about… here you go:

FALLEN ASHES

As the last of her kind, Fallen awakes in a holding cell, but being locked up is the least of her problems.

She's been magically bound to a cocky Queen's Guardian named Saber. Because Fallen is the last dragon shifter in Tapestry, she's on everyone's hit list… especially his… but she doesn't have time to die by his hand. Fallen has to find her life mate in four weeks or else all of creation in her world will be destroyed.

Saber never asked to be brought to life. He certainly never wanted to be hexed and forced to transform into a mindless shadow assassin. Exiled from the Kingdom, he must rescue his stepfather from the Collector to prove his innocence. Otherwise he'll be hunted and killed. But his plans are temporarily put on hold when he's captured, imprisoned, and bound to a mysterious blond-haired vixen with a major fire addiction.

With time ticking away for Saber and Fallen, will the two be able to come together to defeat the Collector and save themselves, along with the rest of the world?

– And if you have a moment, feel free to add Fallen Ashes to your goodreads to read pile. AddtoGoodreads.jpgWhat are you celebrating this week?

Before they can be paired, however, they’re drawn into a tournament where Marcin will compete to free his estranged imprisoned brother, while Selena battles for the life of another wulfkin alpha. Will tribe loyalty triumph, or will they realize they’re better off as a team before it’s too late?

Heart Stopper by Tamara Narayan

Sore Throat to Heart Surgery

It's a familiar scenario for parents. You child pulls on your sleeve right in middle of the morning rush to school and/or work and says, "My throat hurts." You dig out a thermometer (if you can find it) and discover they have a slight fever. From past experience, you figure it's a cold, a virus. Antibiotics won't do anything. Why bother dragging them to the doctor's office? Time to break out your favorite brand of acetaminophen or ibuprofen, popsicles, and a jumbo box of Kleenex, right?

Image: Nathan LeClair: Flu Season 101

Most likely, yes. But there is a chance that the sore throat is caused by streptococcus, a bacterium. In the early stages of the infection, it can be difficult to distinguish between a viral infection (a cold) and strep. Not all children with strep develop a fever off the bat. Some will have stomach aches, but how often have parents heard the wail, "My tummy hurts!" right before the school bus arrives?

Image: Paul

Strep can be sneaky. If the symptoms are mild and the child recovers quickly, parents may not be aware of the bigger dangers lurking in their child's body. The antibodies produced by the immune system to fight the strep could attack the wrong targets, including joints and the heart. This is rheumatic fever and it can develop several weeks to months after the initial strep infection.

Rheumatic fever can scar the valves of the heart so they can't open and close properly, causing the heart to pump harder. This is now rheumatic heart disease. If the damage is severe, the heart valve may need to be replaced with surgery.

In my novella Heart Stopper, eleven-year-old Tessa Radner's sore throat starts on the morning she's scheduled to hop on a plane for a highly anticipated trip to Disney World. Not wanting to miss the plane and ruin the trip, her father doesn't even consider taking her to a doctor. Instead, he gives her Tylenol and Gatorade. A few months later, Tessa is being airlifted to a hospital for emergency heart surgery. Here are the cover and links :

Four chilling short stories, available on Amazon

This progression from sore throat to heart surgery is possible, but rare. Here is a four minute video I watched as part of the research for Heart Stopper about a real case of rheumatic heart disease in a young boy.

YouTube: Stop Sore Throats from Hurting Hearts, New Zealand

If your child gets a sore throat, do not panic! Less than 3% of people with untreated strep develop rheumatic fever. But do seek medical treatment, especially for children with a high fever, swollen tonsils, and/or pus on the tonsils.

Take them to their pediatrician for a rapid strep test. A nurse will swipe the back of their throat with a big q-tip, making them gag and glare at you. After fifteen minutes, you'll either get a prescription for antibiotics (positive) or the sample will be sent off to a lab for more vigorous testing (and they only call you if that is positive).

What I'm Celebrating This Week

– This week has been a bit crazy busy. It's conference time at work, which means presenting to the National team, doing lots of prep work ahead of time, and being social. You'd think working in Social Media I'd love being social. Between us, I'm more of a hermit.

– I'm looking forward to the weekend, because work conference will be complete and I can realx, sleep in, and do more writing.

– So far, I've hit 30K words on my current Dragon WIP. That's just shy of the half way point. My goal is to have this baby completed by early September.

– I wrote the opening chapter of my new Urban Fantasy, and I plan to continue working on that book in the background to get it moving along.

– Yesterday, I jotted down my upcoming book launches so I can get a bit more organized. I have 2 books coming out later this year, an urban fanatasy mid next year, and potentially 3 series next year. Wow… Figured in 2016, I'll have released 5 books, so surely I could at least match that.

Excerpt from Malediction by Erzabet Bishop

Alistair spotted the gorgeous brunette across the room and, when she approached the refreshment table, he followed. For a millisecond he’d taken her for the scrawny woman in the red dress, but on closer inspection he was pleased to note the differences. Same dress, but the way this woman wore it, he was tempted to peel it from her, inch by scrumptious inch.
His pack mate had poured a few bottles of something into the punch and, while it was entertaining to watch some of the guests succumb to the antics of the season, he didn’t quite feel the same about the sexy female in front of him. This woman would be far more interesting sober, he had a hunch and his predictions usually turned out to be spot on. The markings on her arms intrigued him and he wondered if they covered more of her body. Like tendrils of smoke curling around her flesh, they spiraled around her skin in an unending pattern, giving him the urge to trace every single one and see where it led.
He should be home at Briarwood, but his duties as Beta brought him here to make sure Jessup didn’t get too out of hand. So far the pup had been a bit mischievous, but nothing that would make him worry. Whatever concerns he had melted when he gazed at the beauty in front of him, his animal taking control.
Serious gray eyes winked at him from behind an elegant lacy black mask and he had the urge to peek beneath it to see what she was hiding. Full lips bowed below the mask, and her mass of dark hair was wound into an up-do that he longed to plunge his fingers into while he explored her mouth with his.
Jesus, Alastair. Get a grip.
His wolf perked up when she’d come into view and his instinct to bed her followed in quick succession. He shook it off with a frown. One night stands were not his style, especially with women he didn’t know. He had other concerns and, as soon as he made sure Jessup wasn’t going to fuck up and intoxicate half of the wealthier citizens of Salem, he was out of here. Duncan was still missing and he’d left Laurel in charge in his stead.
But, her eyes. Fuck. They fairly glowed with a power that socked him in the gut as they watched him from behind the mask. When she wet her lips and took her bottom lip between her teeth, he almost lost the battle with himself not to let his beast take over and drag her into the nearest coat closet.
“Are you here with someone?” He cleared his throat, aware of the growl threading through his voice.
“No. Are you?”
“Just a couple of friends. What do you think? Want to end up in a compromising situation with a stranger?” He grinned and, seeing Jessup approach, steered her away from the refreshment table. Alistair wanted her to himself, at least for a little while.
“Seven deadly sins? How about a dance? With my footwork, that could lead towards all kinds of infractions.”
“Hmm.” He swung her into his arms and into the crowd, relishing the sensation of his hand on her lower back. The plunging view offered by her bodice made his body stand at attention and the wolf beneath his skin whined with want. “So, which deadly sin could you possibly have that would sink a guy faster than lust? That dress…”
“These shoes.”
“Oh, but those… those are not a sin. Not at all. In fact, I could look at them all night long.”
“You could, could you?” The woman laughed, deep and sensual. Her eyes snapped with amusement. “Then you try wearing them.”
“Maybe I will.” He wanted her, and the closer they got, the more obvious it was going to become. He weaved her around the dance floor, her movements matching his. Her perfume and the spicy scent of her hair were making it hard to concentrate. At the look in her eyes, he dragged her back hard against him, his animal wild in his blood.
“Do you want to get out of here?”
“Please.”
“Let’s get some air.” Alistair led her out onto the balcony, the twinkle lights flickered making the grounds outside the hotel look enchanted. He had to clear his head.
“Who are you?” Alistair brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
“I’m just a girl who needs an escape from reality. How about you?”
“Same here.”
“Just a girl, huh?” The mystery woman smiled.
He gathered her into his arms, letting her feel the full force of his arousal. “I don’t know. I’m not feeling much like a girl right now.”
“No. I didn’t think you were.” She leaned into his embrace, her lips curving up in an inviting smile.
“What’s your name?”
“Bridget. Yours?”
“Alistair.”
“Well, Alistair. It’s nice to meet you. I have one question.”
“What’s that?”
“How long is it going to take for you to kiss me?”
“Time me.” Alistair’s mouth covered hers hungrily and he forced her mouth open with his thrusting tongue. She gasped, trembling within his embrace and he pulled her deeper into the shadows, away from prying eyes.

Excerpt

As I reached for the door handle, Jacqueline returned with a jacket and a baseball hat. The music blasting through the walls.

“Where’d you get those?”

“Stole them.” She tossed me the black sports jacket and I donned it. Then she helped me stuff my hair up into the cap.

The jacket hung to my knees and swallowed me. My stomach clawed into my throat.

“It’s the best I can do under short notice.”

“And my skirt?” I tugged the sides of the black dress. “They’ll never buy that I’m a boy if they notice it.”

“Keep your head down and keep moving.”

Uneasiness crawled into my gut and my heart slammed against my sternum before my fingers even brushed the door. Jacqueline pushed past me and straight to one of the muscled guys who barely gave her a glance.

I snuck out of the bathroom, thankful for the throng of people. In the corner, Jacqueline flipped her blonde hair over her shoulder to distract the suited guy. Across the dance floor, I spotted another of Ms. Moor’s minions and ducked under a table. The couple gave a gasp and I shushed them.

“Sorry, it’s my ex. He’s crazy.” I crossed my fingers that they’d believe me.

“Don’t need to tell us about crazy exes,” the girl answered.

Peeking out, I realized I’d lost sight of Jacqueline. Had they figured out what she was up to? There. She stood a few tables from the dance floor waving her hands like she was flagging a street race and I dashed to the other side of the bar. My heart thumped in my chest like I’d swam a hundred relays. How could five feet from the door seem so far?

When the guy talking with Jacqueline suddenly turned to see what she was staring at, which was me, I tucked my hat down and shook my shoulders as though laughing with the others near me. The goon stared at me and his eyes narrowed. Then he spun and careened through the crowd, barreling right for me. God! He’d spotted me. I jerked away from the bar to run. Muttering an apology, I pushed around people while constantly looking back at the guy, who was now shoving dancers out of his way. Acid rose in my throat. His flicked out his cell and yelled something into it.

My breath came out in short huffs. Could I make it outside? I sprinted through an opening in the crowd. Nearly to the door, a brawny guy grabbed my arm and I screamed. The music drowned out my protest.

My assailant gave the bouncer a wink and a fist full of cash, which he shoved into his pocket and looked away.

“Let’s go, freak,” he seethed into my ear.
