Today I'd like to introduce you to the lovely, Kyra Halland. I met her on a group in Goodreads and I really adore the premise of her novel. Here she is to chat about The Lost Book of Anggrid.
Thanks, Tania, for having me on your blog today! I've been invited to talk about my latest novel, The Lost Book of Anggird.
I've always loved fantasy, ever since reading the Prydain Chronicles and the Earthsea Trilogy when I was in grade school. I've also always loved a good love story; I'm just a big romantic inside! I always had trouble finding books that combined the two things, fantasy and romance, in a way I found satisfactory, with both elements playing an equal role, so when I started writing, I decided to write the kinds of novels I wanted to read.
The Lost Book of Anggird, my third published novel, is a perfect example of how I combine fantasy and romance in my novels. Lost Book starts out with Perarre Tabrano, a free-spirited translator of ancient languages who is determined to make a fabulous career for herself in a society where opportunities for women are limited. She's invited to apply for a prestigious position as a translator for the famous Professor Roric Rossony, the world's greatest expert on magical theory. Unfortunately, Professor Rossony is not an easy person to work for or get along with. Still, Perarre finds herself fascinated with him, in spite of herself, and he finds himself fascinated with her, in spite of himself, and thus begins the romance.
Professor Rossony is carrying out top-secret research into why magic is beginning to fail. He gets his hands on some books he isn't supposed to have, and then things go terribly wrong. With that, he and Perarre set out together on a journey to discover a way to fix the magic, and uncover a terrible wrong committed centuries earlier.
The love story between Perarre and Roric balances equally with their quest to discover what went wrong with magic and fix it. But more than that: their quest and the difficulties they face test their relationship and ultimately strengthen it. At the same time, the success of their quest depends not only on their working together but on the strength of the bonds between them. You can't take the love story out of Lost Book and still have it work; you also can't take the fantasy out of it and just leave the romance. Both elements, fantasy and romance, are essential to the story.
Another feature of my books is the strong female characters. They don't necessarily possess great physical strength; they have the kind of strength that allows them to endure great hardship without losing faith in themselves, their partners, or life itself, as well as the kind of strength that helps them make the tough decisions and do what has to be done no matter the consequences or how hard it is. With my male characters, I also emphasize those kinds of strengths as much as physical strength. And while my guys certainly aren't perfect, a trademark of the relationships I write is that the man's respect for the woman (and the woman's for the man, as well).
And that's the kind of story I love to read and write, and I hope other readers who enjoy fantasy, romance, and memorable characters will love my stories too!

About Kyra Halland:
Beginning with the Prydain books by Lloyd Alexander and the Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula K. Leguin, Kyra Halland has always loved fantasy. She has also always loved a good love story. In 1990, as a new stay-at-home mom with a young baby, she finally decided to combine those two loves – like chocolate and peanut butter! – by writing the kinds of romantic fantasy novels she wanted to read.
Courageous and complicated heroes, strong, smart, and sweet heroines, magic, romance, adventure, heroism, excursions into the dark corners of life and human nature, and a dash of offbeat humor – all of these make up Kyra Halland's worlds. She is pleased and excited to share those worlds with readers, and hopes that others will enjoy her worlds and stories and characters as much as she does.
Kyra Halland lives in southern Arizona. She has a very patient husband, two less-patient cats, and two young adult sons. Besides writing, she enjoys scrapbooking and anime, and she wants to be a crazy cat lady when she grows up.
